Thanks @pkml3. BTW did you see my post about the email notification? I’m not getting emails anymore. I believe it’s a setting that can be changed.

  2. ML and FL very cute together after the Yo Chicken Rap party episode! I like the ML’s confident pursuit and the tricks up his sleeve to keep her with him. Junho plays him beautifully (further hints of TRS).

Secretary No’s ‘date warfare’ – great fun.

And now the lush orchestral incidental music – evoking Disney Cinderella moments and old-fashioned Hollywood. Our FL is working alone in the main King of the Land room (ball room moment). She is deftly laying table covers, and as one white cover settles onto the table, our ML stands there looking at her. Nothing unusual but I like the way the show amps up the romance in the context of the hotel (castle).

  3. Arab prince wants to visit the palace of the Josean Emperors’ with GW and SR (Gyeongbokgung Palace – I think!) … the show makes good use of this.

  4. Kalispera and thank you @Packmule3!

What a lovely episode. I really enjoyed Won and Sa Rang’s scenes together! @Kate you are right! It is getting better with each episode!

Also the META reference in the “Red Sleeve Cuff”. Kudos to the writer and the director! I laughed when I saw the Palace…and then Jun Ho said “it feels familiar”. LOL. Of course it did, Seja! LMAO

So, their ROYAL Joseon wedding is a foreshadow, what do you think?

The more I see his Noona though, the more I despise her character. She manipulated and gaslighted Sa Rang to do her bidding, when in reality Go Wun even begged her for that helicopter. And she said no in that board meeting. At this point, she doesn’t deserve to inherit the business. She only cares about numbers and she has her employee / people as liabilities.

I think that Gu Won will start to take initiaves regarding the Hotel because of Sa Rang. He will also listen more closely to stories regarding his sister and what she is doing with all the other employees of their family business.

Noona won’t know what it hit her. After all, Gu Won brought the Arab Prince to her hotel and she didn’t.

Hi @Kate and @Cleo, I saw Episode 7 in bits and pieces but I got most of the action LOL. So the coupling is coming along well (although I did feel that spending more than 30 seconds of screen time seeing GW staring at SR over the white cloth of the table was a bit much. Signs that show really has too little plot to work with, I guess. However, it all looked very good… I, too, could stare at Junho for a long time LOL.

I didn’t watch Cinderella to know the meta references but I laughed over TRS meta, plus at how he flipped his coattails the way the emperor used to do.

I continue to like that GW is changing from the self-occupied, ivory tower person to learning from SR how people live and work, what give her meaning in her work, and the concept of taking on the responsibility fully and doing one’s best just because. It’s time he listens to his assistant, San Shik, who’s been trying to get him to compete with Hwa Ran and to take on his true role as the son of the woman who had directed the hotel.

I really want him to best his cold-blooded half sister and take over the whole MI Group. I really liked that SR managed to put in a word of her own to thank GW at the press conference, when Hwa Ran was using it to up her own image deceitfully.

I liked the petty, jealous GW and Korean-speaking Arab prince interactions (his Korean was really good!). Silly and fluffy, and yes @Cleo, full of prefiguring of how things will turn out between GW and SR.

@GrowingBesutifully, I loved that you discussed Sarang acknowledging that GW saved her, in defiance of the half-sister’s manipulation. The power plays have been set up and I think the obvious one is the conflict between the half siblings. I am looking forward to Sarange entering the fray as GW’s ally. It has already been established that she is very intelligent, being a polyglot, and a quick learner. She has risen in her position and is viewed as a hospitality star but her role is not in leadership and is underappreciated. However there is more to her than the superficial and I hope that we get to see her in all her power. I love Junho
He’s an actor who can do no wrong in my book but I want Yoona to be his equal. He has saved her but ultimately I hope she saves him(and not in a Pretty Woman way).

I am not a shipper generally but these two are my fantasy ship
I have only shopped once and that was So Ye-jin and Hyun Bin in CLOY. But that is an anomaly
There just is something sweet about these two idol a tors who have also given us some wonderful music/dance performances like Senorita that just is pure pleasure. Even if they never become a real couple, they are masters of illusion and the kids scene ending the last episode shows how glorious they are. A wonderful case of versimilatude. ❤️🎉🌄

@GB- I found the actor playing the Arab prince familiar and it was only when GW pulled out the Squid Game Player 199 tracksuit that I remembered that the actor was in Squid Game! Another meta reference!

And yes I thought it was a beautiful triumph that SR managed to also thank GW from her heart (unscripted, completely genuine – contra the set up for press event to glorify HR) for her hilltop salvation. SR knew she was in a spot but she also knew how to gently and diplomatically ease her way of out it (which we also saw in the Arab prince’s proposal). It was also satisfying for me to see how GW also figuratively “rescued” SR by telling HR that he was the one who directed SR to thank him, and that it was not of latter’s volition (he’s a knight!); otherwise no telling what would be the consequence for SR. Though I think the show has alluded to HR picking up on the rship between our hero and heroine already.

  8. Unnie,

    Kalimera. I haven’t watched Episode 8 yet. I will post later on…

  9. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Hi @OAL, I’ve finally watched Ep 8 and realised what you’re talking about. Another fun, fluffy episode with rivalry and bromance between the Arab prince and GW.

I appreciate that this show does not pretend to be much more than a series of lengthened multiple dates, with a smidgen of fighting for justice for the staff and the search for GW’s missing mother thrown in.

I liked the ‘date’ by the Han River where SR continued to share her fave snacks with GW. She had introduced him before to a tasty teppanyaki restaurant, and now to the joys of convenience store food. GW even got to enjoy the Korean sauna experience with lots of jjimjibang-style eggs (I had to look up the recipe).

That show has GW doing the serving and ending up being chef as well, is a great giving-back moment from GW who’s had everything done for him so far.

Yes, @OAL, I hope SR too has her chance to give back on the helping/saving/protecting part of their relationship. She would be his best ally, assuming he does not annoy her too much (LOL, I was watching the preview for the next episode).

    🙂

Hi @Swiss_postscripts and @Cleo, I’ve only managed to watch KTL but not “19th Life”.

Yes, so true about GW saving SR by saying that he told her to mention him during the interview. I had the same thought, about how amazingly diplomatic SR was, when she rejected the Arab prince. He was not offended at all.

Ah, I didn’t watch Squid Games and missed the meta. So that 199 track suit was supposed to be Samir’s in Squid Games? LOL. What fun.

Junho continues to be so hot in shirt and apron as chef… one feels so well fed just looking at him, the food will just be a side dish LOL.

  11. Okay, so plot is paper thin, and this show is just about looking a 2 pretty people go on dates, but I don’t care. I can watch Junho making goo-goo eyes at Yoona all day.
Anyway, ep. 7 & 8 were cute to watch. I found it interesting that GW asked SR for permission to kiss her. Even more interesting was she did not respond directly to the question: she did not say “yes” or nod her head *unless I somehow missed it). So what was the point of asking?

Now that they are officially a couple, it will be interesting to see what happens in the second half of the drama. Agree with others here it would be nice to see GW and SR team up together as equals to solve the mystery of GW mother and take down the sister and bring a new style of leadership to the king Hotel (and King Group). I keep thinking Dal Eul is headed toward divorce. Those awful in-laws, her good-for-nothing husband, it feels like he is up to something-an affair? I wonder what the big secret is for Pyung Hwa? Did she have an affair with the married Co-Pilot? It doesn’t seem likely.

@Table122000, you just provided the hidden reasons why the plot may be more than it appears to be. There is so much to chew over as you have so beautifully demonstrated. I think that’s a hallmark of K Dramas. They’re like onions, very layered and full of varied tastes from bitter to sweet. Also it seems like K Dramas have a lot of broken families. You don’t get the cookie cutter nuclear families of US TV of the 1950’s even in what purports to be light dramas. And a random thought, the background music can be very lush, reflective of the lu ury of the hotel. And Yoona’s Sarang is a great plucky, smart heroine, who isnot afraid to laugh at the contradictions of our hero.

  13. @Table – I’ve noticed the ask seems to be more common these days in this me too era. I saw it translated as “please allow me” which didn’t necessarily need a response. Regardless , it was hot. I don’t know what bubble the folks who made this live in that they couldn’t see the controversy regarding the “Arab prince” coming from a mile away. Talk about an unforced error. It reminds me of Shooting Stars where the entire continent of Africa was referenced as a single developing country. I too am watching for the two leads – I don’t think anyone but Junho could make this drama work.

  14. @OldAmericanLady: Yes, there are some mysteries to solve in this drama. You are correct that K Dramas often show dysfunctional families. I think “family healing” may be a trope in K Dramas as there are a lot of dramas where once the ML and FL begin a relationship, this relationship also brings about a healing within the characters family relationship as well. It doesn’t have to be total healing, but there is usually improvement.

@Good Twin: That is very interesting that you see “ask scene” increasingly included in dramas these days. I think the translation you saw of “please allow me” makes much better sense in the context of the scene since there was no evidence of a direct response. The dreaded “Netflix translation” rears its head here.
Well, yes, it is surprising that they didn’t know the character of the “Arab” prince wasn’t an immediate controversy. I think there was another drama with a similar character portrayal some years ago that caused a similar blow-up. Perhaps they thought that since the character was a positive one (a good guy, not a villain) it would be okay. Their intentions were pure, and the character himself was respected by the other characters in the show. I guess they thought that was enough to avoid controversy. The “playboy prince/playboy chaebol” is a stock character type.

  15. In need of fluff last weekend, I went back to watching this one and am all caught up.

What’s frustrating about these two dramas–KTL and SYIMNL–(besides being broadcast at the same time even though they are about the same thing (rich motherless men running hotels in Seoul with a FL/sidekick) is that I think they got the lengths wrong/switched. SYIMNL has so much backstory that I think it will be hard to address everything satisfactorily in 12 episodes. Whereas KTL hardly has enough plot for 16 let alone 12 episodes.

The writers should have looked to “Love to Hate You,” which did everything it needed to do in 10 neatly tied up episodes, and without the need for long lingering shots of just two people staring at each other. This made the one longer shot of the FL staring at the ML (on a poster) that much more poignant.

This drama is really dependent on the beauty of its two leads. Can you imagine watching long closeups of a (great but) homely actor just staring at his FL for many minutes out of each episode? Most viewers would switch the channel. Watching Jun Ho watch the FL make the table, especially with all those shots of his face next to the tablecloth, I kept thinking, wow, he really has beautiful lips. (There wasn’t much else to think about!)

For a rom-com, I find that I’m really not all that invested in the OTP. The FL is fine but I don’t find her all that interesting as a character. What interests me more is the ML becoming more empathetic and learning what life is like for regular people, i.e., the people who work for his company. I hope he becomes a better boss than his sister and takes better care of his workers. The other thing that interests me is seeing the struggles of women who work in the service industry–especially the married woman who has no family support at all. They have to do everything their male co-workers do but in less comfortable clothing and shoes. And with a smile on their face! (Do the male co-workers walk around smiling all the time?)

BTW the translation on my Netflix account for that kiss was: “Do I have your permission?”

  16. Old American Lady (OAL)

@BethB, Check out Yoona ND Junho in their idol best performing Senorita on YouTube. They are graceful and sexy. They are beautiful dancers. There are other videos of these two there to. They are a sight to behold.Enjoy !

    Test: Re-subscribing to this thread.

  18. @Table122000, after GW asked SR’s permission to kiss her, she did not pull away or push him back. We’ve seen that plenty of times in dramas, usually because someone’s phone is ringing or someone enters the room. So SR’s silently staying in kiss proximity demonstrates her intent. And I say hooray for this trend: I found it romantic and sexy that GW respected SR’s body autonomy.

On another topic, I wondered why GW was rapturous over the taste of the eggs at the sauna. Had he never eaten a hard boiled egg? But when I looked up Korean sauna eggs, I learned they aren’t standard hard boiled eggs: because they’re cooked for a long period of time, they undergo a Maillard reaction, causing them to have a nutty flavor and the yolks to have a creamier texture. As I write this, I’ve got a dozen eggs cooking in my Instant Pot. I’m curious to taste the difference.

  19. Old American Lady (OAL)

@Welmatis, Thanks for the sauna egg information I’m fascinated by sauna culture in general
I the New York area there are at least two multistory Korean bathhouses. The Japanese also have communal baths. And Eastern European Christians and Jews have a steam bath culture where there are steam baths, cold baths and bathers being struck with leaves on tree branches. They are sometimes called Russian baths. My Dad used to go regularly and said they were very invigorating. In my old neighborhood there are some old buildings that used to be public bathhouses when people lived in tenements without bathing gacilio
That’s where the expression Saturday night baths arose. It was a time twhen people were considered clean if they bathed once a week. Men and women had separate sections. And some had swimming pools. One of my grandfather’s came from Belarus and he swam several times a week.

And there is a Jewish tradition of ritual baths or mikvahs. The waters are kept clean and people only enter when they have been scrupulously clean down to under the nails and all of the crevices. Men and women use the mikvah to purify themselves for various rituals. Women also use the mikvah after menstruation . And both sides of a couple separately use the mikvah before marriage. One unintended consequence of Jewish cleanliness is that Jews were less likely to come down with bubonic plague. That in turn lead to accusations of witchcraft resulting in massacres of Jewish populations at the time. In retrospect, it seems that antisemitic populations look for any excuse to murder Jewish people. All in the name of fill in the blanks G-d. So there are unintended consequences to Jewish cleanliness and food purity. Ain’t that a kick in the head!

    .

  20. @Welmaris and @Oal – thank you both for this fascinating information.

@Welmaris, were the eggs a success?

@OAL – if I were in NY, I’d love to visit a Korean bath house. How interesting about the history and the health benefits. I had no idea too about the way the way the results of this practice were then used by anti-Semites for purposes of persecution.
