The Matchmakers: Open Thread

The thread is open.

I must say that Rowoon is one industrious idol-turned-actor. He did “Extra-Ordinary You” in 2019, “She Would Never Know” and “The King’s Affection” in 2021, “Tomorrow” in 2022, and “Destined With You” and this drama in 2023. I’m glad that he’s making hay while the sun shines.

This drama is about a widower and widow getting together to perform a matchmaking service for Joseon women in search of husbands. Hmmm… when did I first see this kind of plot? Ah! “Flower Crew: Joseon Marriage Agency” (2019).

Since this is kdrama, we can expect the main leads to have clashing work styles and lifestyles at the outset. But they’ll eventually get over their differences — and even height differences — and find love in each other’s arms, blah blah blah.

I’ll join you for a few episodes to see how this goes.

Let’s enjoy the show!

  1. Kalimera @Packmule3!

Thank you for opening this thread! I think we are going to laugh with their antics!

  2. I am watching the first episode and laughing at the expressed concern that young people are not marrying, something to do with a ghost virgin! and current day low marriage rates in S. Korea?.

  3. Why are all the court ladies in kdramas Chois?

  4. It was a good first episode.
The chemistry between the leads is pretty good. And we will get to see palace politics as well..

    *More tomorrow.

  5. Kalimera @Packmule3!

As it seems one of my comments awaits moderation! Can you see if you can find it?
    Thank you in advance!

  6. Reposting @monmor’s comment here.

    ********

I actually came here to make a comment about matchmakers. I watched the second episode too late and slept through part of it as my watch And memory tells me. Lucky me I get to watch it again.

Much as I like Rowoon there is something I do not like about his diction. I found this slightly annoying in destined with you but it’s particularly noticeable here. Perhaps it is how he is speaking sageuk.?

  7. Thank you, @packmule3. I am posting to test if I get updates (ref GB). So far so good on this drama.

Hi @Fern, thank you for posting to check on getting emails with ref. to my predicament … are you getting the updates in email? I cannot get any subsequent emails from BOD still. I’m sad. 😔😥 However I keep coming back to manually check on who may have posted something new to see what I missed. 🧐🥸🤪😎😅

  9. @Growing Beautifully, this is a test reply.

Hi @Fern, thanks for trying and replying … I can only see your test reply here, on the thread itself. The emails are just not being received or not being sent. I’m wondering which email server is acting up, or whether there’s a limit that I’ve reached and so cannot get anymore automated emails.

A more tech savvy friend of mine suggested that my gmail server might be blocking BOD intermittently. But I have no control over that. 😩😠😣

  11. In reference to marriage bans – this isn’t the first time I’ve heard of that in relation to royal marriages in K-dramas. Gosh, the opposing political parties have so many ways to delay or prohibit royal marriages beyond just bribery, bullying or burying.

It’s interesting that the king doesn’t want his daughter to become a virgin ghost, which is what will happen if her groom remarries. I’ll bet we’ll find that the princess’s death was murder most foul – she was one of the King’s children, so her offspring could be in line for the throne. Is this why Shim Jung Woo is asking about gold silkworm’s poison?

I wonder why the matchmakers historically become widowed early? I was moved by the relationship between Soon Deok and her husband, which has shaped her philosophy on matchmaking for a compatibility rather than just to unite families.

Like Rowoon’s character Jang Shin Yu in Destined with You, Shim Jung Woo is due for a fall. He is entitled, arrogant and rude. I’m enjoying how he unravels when he meets Soon Deok (I fell for you. I didn’t fall for you.) or when he reads the soft porn book. Although a scholar, he has little life experience or empathy. He is quick to take offense and quick to look for the negative aspects of others.

I’m enjoying Jo Han Chul’s King. It’s a fairly subtle portrayal and he has some empathy for the awkward and inflexible Jung Woo. In episode 2, I liked how he both appreciated Jung Woo’s IQ, but told him that he would never make it in politics if he didn’t understand that sometimes you have to lose a bit to gain more.

  12. Hello, @Growing Beautifully. Just to confirm, I have received the email of your ‘Hi, @Fern. Thanks…’ reply. It may well be your server, similar to how Bing would let me read the blog, but not enter it intermittently. It may be something to do with the settings in your gmail account?

  13. I found this reference to gold silkworm poison, the one that JW requested from the shop keeper. Even the way it is made is gruesome. I don’t know if the link will work.
