The Story of Park’s Marriage Contract: Open Thread

The thread is open.

This is on Viki. “My Demon” which is also starting tonight is on Netflix.

Link to “My Demon” open thread is here. My Demon: Eps 1 & 2 Open Thread

Since both plots revolve around a marriage contract, I’m going to observe which couple has:

a better “meet-cute,”
a more antagonistic male,
a less ditzy female, and
a better “yin-yang” chemis…err…symbiosis.

I’ll also judge the shows for their comedic moments, plotholes, tropes done with a fresh interpretation, and as usual, overall message about life.

May the better show prevail.

@Fern, your trial Viki subscription will come in handy this week. I don’t know how much it costs in the UK, but here it’s $5.99/month for standard, and $9.99/month for premium. I tell myself that it’s still cheaper than a one-hour counseling session with my mental health therapist. 🙂

Let’s enjoy the show.

  1. @packmule3, I had a limited time to un-subscribe on the 20th and my little window wasn’t long enough to figure out how to change my options, so I’m paying for one month. Later in December, I can ask for a year for my Christmas present. So I’m on Viki for the foreseeable future.

Again, so many dramas so little time.

  2. @Fern,

Also be on the look out for special discounts for new members. I remember signing up for these memberships when there was a Mother’s Day, Valentine’s Day or Christmas sale. I used to be a member of Dramafever, too. That was pre-Netflix.

  3. Thank you for the thread @Packmule3! I am waiting for this one for Lee Se Young.

@Fern, the only subscription I enjoy paying for is Viki. I can watch any show that they have taken the licence and it is available to our region, on the same day with its broadcasting day. With the exception of some shows like “The Deal”, that are available for us some time later.

I have nothing but good things to say about my Vike subscription. It is a great value considering the sheer volume of content that a t t heyhive frommultiple Asian countries. It is fun for me to contrast Mainland China content with that from Taiwan. I also look to see how much censorship I can detect. It has also expanded my enjoyment of new actors and has added to my ability to contrast various dramas remakes in different countries. For me the most disappointing streamer is Disney+ for Asian content. most of it appears on Hulu, that I don’t have. I read that the two will be subsumed into one entity a i hope this happens soon. With the addition of Netflix and Amazon primeI believe that I have a plethora of riches.

  5. Vicki is hosting a korean drama appreciation day soon this month sometime. In addition to special interviews et cetera, it looks like there will be specials on vicki subscriptions Probably the main purpose of the day.

  6. Hello.

I enjoyed both episodes. Lee Se Young is amazing and I have a theory after watching the last minutes of Episode 2.

I haven’t read the Webtoon. These my assumptions.

Yeon Woo’s husband in Joseon didn’t die because of his heart disease. He was poisoned. Since the green eyed Gisaeng seems to be a Deity the flashback that was shown to us and her Oracle towards YW, shows that Tae Ha and Yeon Woo are meant to be but the evil stepmother is killing them.

I am curious to see if she was sent to 2023 to stop her and save Tae Ha this time.

    We shall see…

  7. I really like Lee Se Young. I saw her first in Doctor John. I watched the trailers and it looks so good. I don’t know how I’ll fit this in. Arrrrgh.

  8. @Fern,

Lee Se Young delivers every single time. My first show with her was Doctor John and then The Memorist.

I do hope you will start watching this one, because it is rather interesting!

  9. So far I am enjoying the themes and the two main leads. I was disappointed at the number of tropes they crammed into the first two episodes. How many images of butterflies do we need? The scene with the television was too similar to The legend of the blue sea, I think it was.

I only watched the episodes quickly. And I’m not sure whether I will continue now Or wait until There are more episodes. I hope it offers something new In what is currently a very competitive field

  10. I think it was Rooftop Prince where the butterfly was an important motif?

This could still be a good drama even if it is not that fresh if it is solid. I think the elements are there for that.

  11. This show also references “the red sleeve cuff” with the actress of course but also with the theme of female empowerment.

There is a good collection of veteran actors.

  12. I really liked these first two episodes–it’s mostly light and fun. I think the writer is very aware of all the tropes and scenes from other dramas they are referencing. That’s part of the fun for me, to try to remember where else I’ve seen these things.

The water-as-a-time portal has been used a lot (Splish Splash Love, etc.), including very recently Durian’s Affair, where two Joseon women emerge from a modern-day pond (and also just so happen to luckily run into rich/powerful people). In DA, the two Joseon women were much more chaste and submissive, but the FL here had already been shown to be rebellious back in her day, so her cursing at the present-day ML didn’t seem to be that much of an anachronism when it happened.

The FL sleeping in a playground overnight recalled 30 But 17, when the FL there spent her first night out in the world in a playground.

I’m sure there are other references that I didn’t note (poison! butterflies! and haven’t I seen a character with odd-colored eyes before who had supernatural power?)–and there will be sure to be many more along the way. So far I’m preferring this over The Matchmakers, mostly because I like this ML more than I like Rowoon. (And much more than Moon in the Day, which I dropped after the first episode).

  13. The water as time portal Has been used many times and I think it is a great transition for reincarnation ,transmigration Time travel. Yes There is a lot of fun in trying to remember what former dramas this show is referencing. There was one show where the butterfly flew off of A page or off an embroidered handkerchief. Rooftop prince and I think mister queen used water metaphors. I am always amazed how a puddle Or a swimming pool becomes a dark deep ocean. I think learning about the current era after time Travel with television or other electronic devices is featured in a few different dramas but I can’t remember any others right now.

  14. Did one of the magicians in “faith” have odd colored eyes? In under the power there is a character with one blue eye. But I can’t remember now if he has magical powers.

Part of my Disappointment with the television reference was that I don’t think anyone could do it better than Jun Ji Hyun.

  15. @Monmor, the first use of water as a portal that I saw was one of my very first K-dramas: Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo.

  16. QIHM He walks into a lake to go to the future. I had always thought of that as him Drowning himself since death was what took him to the future. But I guess there is also the connection to water and rebirth,

Shining for 1 thing- I do not remember specific water scenes But the lighthouse and the hero falling off the lighthouse were key features of the story.

Legend of the blue sea- The water scene was painted on an urn If I have that correct.
