Happy Year of the Dragon, everyone!

Wishing you all good health, good fortune, good times, good kdramas, and good food!

What are you eating for New Year’s? Maybe I can order something similar from the Chinese, Vietnamese, or Korean restaurant near me this weekend.

Can somebody tell me what that liquid @kennylsong poured in the frying pan that created the fancy, crunchy edible doily pattern? Was it milk? Tofu milk? Coconut milk?

By the way, Viki notified me that it has a sale on subscription.

(I believe that’s the code for the annual plan; it disappeared on my notification too quickly. Rats! Dragons!)

  1. It may be a flour or cornstarch slurry.

  2. @pkml3 thanks for these positive wishes and Happy Lunar New year to all. I wondered about that recipe too, but I usually do because he speeds up the process so much. Oh well, just have to enjoy for the aesthetic experience LOL
    Thx for Viki info also.

    Thanks @pkml3!

Happy New Year to one and all!!

My guess as to what Kenny poured in that became crispy? A thin pancake batter that was fried crisp. ๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿ˜˜

  4. Thanks @PM3, good looking chef to start off the new year! The white liquid is likely to be flour mixed with water.

Happy new year to those who are celebrating ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. My daughter made these the other day. Apparently it’s a thing on insta- or tiktok. Here’s one from YouTube:

To the BOD community, Gong Hey Fat Choy. May you all have a joyous Lunar New YearI hope you eat long noodles for long life. Although I am not Asian, I enjoy watching the celebration and parades.I grew up adjacent to NY Chinatown and find the celebration familiar and comforting. And I hope we see some celebrations on our drama and variety feeds because of our love for Asian dramas(Korean especially).

  9. Happy Lunar New Year to the BOD community and Packmule3 our queen! It’s nice and cool in Taipei (13 degrees Celcius) and everyone is off work for the next five days or so. We had our big reunion dinner tonight with lots of relatives and over 15 dishes. In our family, we give out red envelopes (filled with cash) for older relatives (parents and uncles/aunts, single adults and kids.

Agree the dumpling skirt is a flour and cornstarch slurry. Make sure you use a nonstick pan to cook it.

Have a wonderful year! Take care, friends!

  10. Happy lunar new year BOD! ๐Ÿ‰

Thank you @Fern for the dumpling skirt recipe! Will try to do that this weekend.

  17. @Agdr03, how wonderful! What a special memory!

  18. HAPPY NEW YEAR ALL on this group ..

How coincidental is this .. I had this person’s ‘cookery’ videos pop up on my Insta Feed LOL

And here he is also ..

I have returned to check posts here after a LONG hiatus .. ‘Hungrily’ looking for posts on C-Dramas that I have devoured / chewed / spit out / licked / sniffed / had 2nd and 3rd helpings of ;-p
    over the last 4-5 months.

I went to look up LLTG (Love Like the Galaxy) and saw the thread is closed (boo hoo hoo sniffling).

How do some of us late viewers of the show continue the convo?

I look forward to reading the entries .. but I know it will create a swell of responses .. leading to pressure and frustration because the thread is closed ๐Ÿ™

How do you deal with such ‘nags’? LOL

  19. @agdr03, happy anniversary of your family’s immigration. What a brave thing to do! I’m glad it was the right move for you.

The Saturday before Lunar New Year I had a solo dinner in London’s Chinatown, which was decorated for the upcoming holiday and crowded with people. The restaurant I ended up eating in is notorious for its rude wait staff: some patrons come hoping to be scolded, thinking it fun. I just wanted a quick dinner before going to a performance at the nearby Royal Opera House. The restaurant was packed, and a queue went out the door, but because patrons are expected to share tables (if they refuse, they’re told to get out), I was put at a table for two with a stranger. When he finished gulping down his meal and left, he was replaced with another stranger. That night I had Singapore noodles, which were delicious.

I’m now back home in Southern California. I hung my decorative Lunar New Year flag outside my house: it has a drawing of two children doing the Lion Dance. Unfortunately, even though it was the weekend, my husband was busy all day with work. Because he had to be up in Los Angeles for that, he had lots of choices on the way home where he could stop for Chinese takeout. At my recommendation, to keep with Chinese New Year tradition, he ordered a dish with long noodles for long life, and dumplings for prosperity, along with other food to round out the meal.

  20. @pkml I signed up for a Viki subscription and after some fumbling around setting and resetting a new password was able to save $30 thanks to your posting the coupon code.
An auspicious beginning of this new year, Iโ€™d say๐Ÿงง!
Then proceeded to watch an episode of LTNS (staring Esom and Ahn Jae Hong) which was horrid and crude, so definitely nor a recommendation. ๐Ÿคฃ

  21. @Lootie Lyn,

    Glad you saved money!

Thanks for the heads up on LTNS. I saw what the abbreviation LTNS stood for and I knew it wouldn’t appeal to me. (LTNS = Long Time No Sex) Why anyone should be interested in the frequency/infrequency of some strangers’ sex life is beyond me.

  22. Thank you @Welmaris ๐Ÿ˜˜ Yes, my parents were brave when they decided to live here especially my Dad because he doesnโ€™t have any blood related family here. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Noodles is a must for birthdays for us because it represents long life. Itโ€™s from Chinaโ€™s influence a long time ago. โ˜บ๏ธ

  23. @agdr03, I agree with the others who have commented on the bravery of your family to emigrate
It is so difficult to come to live in another country even when there is a community of your old country there. One has to acculturate, most times learn a new language and learn to rely on new supports. I grew up in a family where my grandparents’generatopn were immigrants and that generation raised me. They would speak native languages when they didn’t want me to understand(I actually learned that language on my own out of necessity. My grandmother believed in becoming an American citizen, so she became active in our local community. The family also were proud that there was ready access to education. Most of my generation graduated from college and have post graduate degrees. Our parents finished high school and had good employment. They went from tenements to private houses.
I thank my good fortune to my grandparents and great aunt who gave me the riches of their backgrounds and their desire to imoart their love ofbefucation to me.

  24. @Old American Lady,

This post was stuck in my “to be moderated” pile. ๐Ÿ™‚ You used your real name and wordpress/jetpack didn’t recognize you.

    Hope @agdr03 sees this.

  25. Old American Lady (OAL)

Thank you @packmule3, I realized what I did after I posted and 8m hap0y you caught it. It’s been stressful at home, with my husband’s illness, so I was on autopilot. I got back to my BOD name pretty quickly. So again, thank you so much. You really run a tight snip and make this a very safe place to comment on a great joy in my life right now. I have noticed that when I post, there is a mechanism that gives our BOD name and email address.I now take my time to include the proper name. Thank you so much again, you’ve saved me a lot of worry.

  26. Thank you @Old American Lady ๐Ÿฅฐ

Yes, it was very brave and my parents said it was mainly for us that they made that decision. My sisters and I are forever thankful and fortunate to be given this life. โ˜บ๏ธ

I am still praying for you and your husband. I hope one day, it will all be ok for you and him. ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿผ

  27. Old American Lady (OAL)

@agdr03 Thanks for your prayers. They help to keep us going and mean a lot to me.
