Queen of Tears: Mark Your Calendars

Saturday, March 9 — as if we didn’t know already. This kdrama is so heavily publicized by Netflix.

I don’t mind spoilers. In fact, I welcome them so that I can:

a. focus my attention on the other 10,001 moving parts of the story,
b. relax and not fret about plot twists, and
c. decide whether this show is worth my time or not.

That said, if you’re going to include spoilers in your comments, please give the other readers a heads-up. Just write “SPOILERS” in big letters and leave it up to them to read or skip your posts. We’re adults here.

  1. Kalimera @Packmule3!

Let us see how this show will go. I am curious for this one.

  2. Kumawoyo! ๐Ÿ™‡๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ

Iโ€™m going to put my expectations down, just incase. ๐Ÿ˜ But Iโ€™m so sold on this pairing, they look so good together. ๐Ÿฅฐ

    @pkml3, @Cleo, @agdr03
The trailer interested me. And it’s been a long time since I’ve seen Kim Soo Hyun on the screen. I’ll have to start watching a week or more later though. See you around!

  4. I’m dropping this one coz of Wedding impossible. @Fern writes elsewhere that she’s bedazzled with that drama. Me too ! I can watch only one drama at a time and that’ll have to be WI unless they wreck it like My Demon (please, no). I hope it turns out like MMH… Better and better with each ep.

  5. Kalispera!

I just watched the Pilot. Goodness what a great first episode!

I got sad thinking about “Doctor Slump” and the mess the script is.

I am waiting for QoT’s second episode and I am debating how I am going to finish Doctor Slump’s Episode 12 to proceed forward… Shiro! ๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ˜ฑ

  6. Helloo carissima @cleo,

I’ll wait for what you guys say and then start watching it ๐Ÿ™ˆ

The trouble is not actually watching two dramas at once. The trouble is, I can’t just do with watching. I must take notes while watching, think about it while driving to various places, type out the output in my head, come to BoD and write a lot about everything I saw while simultaneously reading what everyone else is saying. Otherwise the process is not complete and viewing is not viewing.๐Ÿ™ˆ So many steps take a long time and are unmanageable with two dramas at a time. Phew.

  7. Hey my dear @Arihsi!

I will tell you more about it tomorrow.

Still, I can say is that so far the script is well written and executed brilliantly. We had Oh Jugn Se doing a cameo and it was pretty good. I didn’t get bored and I didn’t pause it at all.

I don’t have time to watch many shows, but I will continue in my pace Doctor Slump and focus on Queen of Tears and The Impossible Heir.

Also, on Monday “The Midnight Studio” starts on Viki and I want to give a try for Kwon Nara and Yoo In Soo. As for “Wedding Impossible” I might binge watch it. We shall see…

  8. Fellas. I watched till ep 2. This drama has a catastrophic potential to make one cry. Ugly cry at that. Not that it didn’t warn us. It’s called “Queen of Tears”, a very direct warning. I’m very scared to proceed.

It seems well written, well directed and of course the performance is superb from both the leads.

BUT. Oh lord, it will make us cry.

  9. Just finished episode 2 and it immediately reminded me of what I hate mostโ€”waiting until the next week for the next episodes!!!! Why is this a successful formula for Netflix or any other streaming service if the material is already produced, unlike my favorite LMDivorce which I realized was filming weekly when I read news of next episodes being delayed due to COVID. Ok back to Dr. Slump after bingewaching first four or so episodes of Marriage Impossible.

  10. @Kelly CC pls join us at the threads for Wedding/ Marriage impossible. A very safe drama compared to this one, I must admit.
More the merrier! I and some of the other BOD gang members are having a ton of fun watching it !

  11. @Arihsi kalispera!

I had the same notion after watching Episode 1. If the FL is 8ndeed you know what, script wise, having a tragic ending would be more realistic.

I am going to watch Episode 2, now…

  12. Correction : Indeed*

  13. If the FL is not telling the truth, it cheapens the love story. If she is, the drama is not a romantic comedy at all. Have not watched Episode 2 yet, so it is too early to tell.

  14. Insanely long episodes! Need a diagram of this family. I have never been on the ML bandwagon until now and his I am so cute tirade. His tears of (joy) at the end of episode! It is interesting see this role reversal. The opening credits are very reminiscent of CLOY – same screenwriter. Don’t know if I’ll stick with it but enjoyed the first episode And @Arihsi I think you’re right that word “tears” is in the title for a reason and I don’t think they’re happy tears but we will see. How many times did ML cry in episode 1?

  15. When she suggests that die together at the beginning of episode 2 ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ

  16. I have watched Episode 2 that was thaaat long as CLOY…

Yes, if that goes as it should be, we will get lots of Tears…

Still, just because Hae In grew up like that, she should treat Hyun Woo more humane.

Most of her family is a psycho and that Matchmaker is awful!

  17. I find it so interesting how on air dramas share similar themes. Last year it was all reincarnation and past lives fated pairs. This year it is super rich dysfunctional families with inheritance or something similar at stake. Sharing this theme: Impossible Heir (which I am dropping until more episodes are out since it is not holding my attention week to week; Wedding Impossible (my current fave) and this drama.

    SPOILERS/theories ahead:

Flashback suggests older brother drowned while HI was saved so mother resents HI.
Leopard print auntie is going to become an ally to the OTP.
Grandpa’s GF is up to something and playing a long game.
And yes matchmaker is toxic and perhaps an attempted murderess since she was behind the wild boar. Why does she hate HI so? Also the actress playing her is great at these type of roles! Talk about getting type casted!

  18. @snow flower,

SPOILER – FL is not lying.

I agree with you that how can anything with terminal illness be branded as “comedy”, romantic or not.

Especially because they show the effects of the illness. She’s confused and doesn’t remember large chunks of time. She remembers him – which shows how much emotional and survival based importance her brain attaches to his memory. – the confusion, not being able to remember and forgetting everyone else but one’s partner or primary caregiver are all realistic and absolutely heartbreaking.

How can any part of this be “funny”?

  19. @Good Twin I know reg ML of this drama, right? Everywhere you look people in comments are writing, “how cute”, “how handsome” etc. No problem with finding anyone handsome but the said clip is regarding declaration of an illness, him saving his cognitively declining wife from a bad CGI of a boar ๐Ÿ—… And how does one find that the only thing one can say is how cute the ML is looking?

And I live in an area where those boars are naturally found. Though very dangerous, they don’t charge at you randomly unless threatened and once they do, there is no dramatic escape. They don’t go down with a single “handsomely shot” bullet.

  20. Light spoilers ahead:

@arihsi – really bad CGI boar which leads me to the this is satire conclusion. Thank you @packmule3 for revealing MMH is satire and for the NYT or some other review that told me Parasite was also satire All of it is satire. The super awfulness of the family. His I am cute tirade – which I’m admitting was super cute when he flapped his wings like a little chick. But what is the satire commenting on? that I am unsure. Parasite was the class struggle. MMH – I’m not sure other than makjongs/soap operas in general

This is not a white hat ML. Remember the scene where he is standing in front of the angel statue with his psychiatrist. It looks like he has angel wings but he is dressed head to toe in black. His wife is dying and he is manipulating the situation to see if he can inherit. Of course we know this will lead to him falling back in love with his wife – fake it until you make it if you will. I have a friend who didn’t realize she needed to leave her husband until she thought he might have died in a crash and realized she felt relief – so those feelings are real. He feels trapped and his wife is conveniently terminally ill and he sees this as an answer. He is not the agent of her illness. He didn’t cause it and he is not trying to make it worse. He does however see it as a way out.

I’ll be interested to see what the screenwriter is trying to say with this drama. Leopard auntie is not cute imo but I think she be the key. We will see.

  21. Yeah. All in all I think I’ll stick to WI only, unless they wreck it completely.

To me, love in general and especially care giving to a terminally ill individual requires a level of commitment that simply cannot be faked.

It can’t be driven by ulterior motives because even in its purest form, it is extremely, extremely hard. It is so hard that there is advocacy for psychiatric help for long term caregivers. Depression is extremely common in this group too.

  22. Kalimera Everyone,

I really liked the plot. We get to see a dysfunctional chaebol family that has its dynamics. Clearly Baek Hyun Woo is from a different world and that needs to be underlined because he entered in a chaebol family, where just because his social class is not the same as them and consequently, he is being treated very differently.

Even though Hyun Woo really loved and still loves Hong Hae In – I am going to back up this-, his everyday bullying and gaslighting, even though he represents Queens for its best of interest tore him down emotionally and mentaly.

I mean, he heard his father in law saying that he will destroy a devoted Secretary just because he chose to quit. He wanted to stab him in the back and that was not a figure of speech. He meant it. He wanted to make him an example for all the persons who dare to leave Queens for whatever reason.

Hong Hae In is born with a silver spoon and she is obnoxious. Even though, she cares / loves Hyun Woo, still she doesn’t show her feelings at all. He is mistreated by her family members, yet she protects him as we have seen when she kicked her younger brother for what he said in their tea time, but that is something he doesn’t know at all.

At the workplace, she is a killer boss who doesn’t care about other people or small shops survival, just because she wants to enter the one trillion club. In order to succeed her cause everyone and everything is just a number.

On the other hand, Hyun Woo grew up in a family where his family are farmers. His family loves each other and dotes on him. After watching Epilogue in Episode 2, his mother especially knows him better than anyone. She always support him, even though his siblings and father don’t understand him at times. This comes in contrast, with Hae In’s mother who seems to blame her for being alive and accussing her for losing an elder son.

When, her tumor diagnosis came out. Hae In doesn’t want to believe it. She still does not. Except when her brain is full with fog and time doesn’t exist, when this happens. She is also unable to function.

Yes, Hyun Woo wants to divorce her. Yes, he feels that he hates her.
Yes, he felt that he will be free from all this burden. If you think it is easy to live somewhere when you cannot freely be yourself and walk on eggs around not only your in laws, but also your wife, just think about it. We are just not in his shoes, but we are witnessing his POV.

Let’s go to the topic, I want to talk about more.

Hyun Woo still loves his wife, even though he says he hates her. I also don’t believe he is happy that she is going to die. He might be relieved that his nightmare will end, but he is not happy. Why do I say that?

Because, he is not playing nice to make her change her will. Just because we saw that scene, where the lawyer divorce friend advises him so, that doesn’t mean HJ is doing so.

In the beginning maybe he started that facade of being nice to her, to make himself be more at ease, but the money or the will is not his primary concern.

His primary concern in all this, is not to be stressed / bullied / being in depression aka his survival mode. Then, we get to see what is under that underlines under this. It is like peeling an onion.

Let’s look at some specific scenes to have a better idea of his actions.

Hyun Woo stopped his presentation in front of the Board of Directors because he believed Hae In had trouble breathing. Noone else did btw.

Then, he stood up for her against her Mother. He even interrupted her and she said so. He dared to interrupt HER aka the Chairman’s daughter.

When Hae In was alone in HERCYNA event and her rival told her all those things to piss her off, she called him and he came in immediately after he won his case in court. He also steadied Hae In, when someone knocked her and lost her balance, just a minute before Mr. Herman came to them for an introduction.

At the hunting place, when the Matchmaker made her move, he came to her and saved her from the boar. He only used his gun then and only when Hae In’s life was in danger.

Hyun Woo is not hunting as the rest of them, who do so because hunting animals is an aristocrats way of showing their status. He doesn’t like them for killing animals just for fun, in order to compete and boast against each other, who is the better one of them.

Subconsciously, HW reacts whenever she is in danger or discomfort. He is shielding her and protects her because deep inside that’s what he told himself he will do, when it has to do with Hae In.

So, I don’t hate HW, nor I find him an immoral person. They are ALL grey characters. I also I believe that the story will be bittersweet.

    And that’s all I wanted to say…

  23. I watched and I wasn’t as shocked as the first episode of MMH BUT that last scene where HW said that he loves HI after learning that she’s terminally ill, hugging her and then he had that look. That look made me think, wait, and then I thought that I love you of his may have come from his nose instead of his heart.

Episode 2 gave me hope because and only because of that morning kiss. If they don’t love each other then that kiss won’t even be allowed at all. We know all the uglies surrounding them and between them so now I want to know how this will be fixed. I really want to know.

  24. Ooops sorry I should have said spoiler ahead. Sorry!

  25. Hey my dear @agdr03,

I should have said SPOILERS too? Hmm….๐Ÿ™„

  26. Speaking of OST. I can’t bring it here but I love Seventeen’s The Reasons of my Smiles. ๐Ÿ™‚

  27. Agree, @agdr03. I like it. I’ll open a thread just for the OSTs for this drama. If it’s anything like “Crash Landing on You,” the songs would be fine-tuned for the show.

  28. Coolies! Thank you!!! ๐ŸŒบ๐ŸŒบ๐ŸŒบ

  29. How are you enjoying the kdrama?

  30. Hi. I actually like this drama, probably just a little less than Wedding Impossible. ๐Ÿ™‚ It’s probably the next level of wealthy-ness from King The Land with the helicopters and personal chef etc. etc. LOL.

I like the premise of rediscovering their love after being married for only 3 years except for the terminal illness issue. You can see where it all went wrong so it wasn’t surprising that HW wants divorce.

KSH and KJW are very good with their characters so yeah, I’m happy to stay. ๐Ÿ™‚

  31. Kalispera!

Ella made an edit and it is brilliant (again…)
