Love O2O: Coffee Mugs and Abduction, pt 2

The first part is here:

Love O2O: Coffee Mugs and Abduction

3. Abduction

The abduction was frequently mentioned in the story that I thought it warranted a second look.

Let’s recap, okay? Nai met Weiwei at the internet café. He was so impressed with gaming skills that he must have researched who she was and figured out that she was Luwei Weiwei, the 7th highest ranking PK gamer and the only female in the top 10. Her character after all wasn’t that too hard to distinguish. As Weiwei said, she chose the avatar who was most conservatively dressed of all the female characters. And from what little I learned about gaming from Memories of the Alhambra, she most likely chose to be equipped with that large and unwieldy cleaver as a weapon.

(Note: That was her original weapon, but after Nai gave the more feminine double knives at their wedding, she started using his gift set starting in Episode 5 when she and the gang fought the robotic boss Meng Dongxing.)

To me, Nai was biding his time to connect with her online, and the first opportunity was that day when Weiwei’s ex ZhenShui remarried. I think he was online and saw how Weiwei became the hot topic on the forum. All the other gamers thought Weiwei gatecrashed the wedding to ABDUCT the groom.

The translation on my Netflix used “steal” the groom so it didn’t connect with me until later on that “abduct” was a better translation. It would connect with Weiwei’s “abduction video” and the rest…

Weiwei wasn’t able to nip the incident in the bud because she left her laptop to use the restroom. When she came back, she discovered that leaving her avatar unattended and stationary at the bridge caused a firestorm online. Here were the comments on the forum:

I can’t help but think of Reed Weiwei right now.
I wonder how she’s feeling.
Reed Weiwei. Isn’t this Reedweiwei?
Does everybody see her?
I see ZhenShui WuXiang’s ex-wife standing on the Vermillion Bird Bridge!
Yes I see her!
I think the view of her back looks so sad.
The newlywed couple laughs while the old lover cries.
My goodness! It’s going to be fun today! She might be here to snatch the groom.

I support Reed Weiwei in stealing Zhen Shui (because) Enchantress Xiao Yu is mine!
(referring to Xiao Yu) Homewrecker! She’s such a pretty woman. Why resort to this?
Why be so ostentatious?
She stole someone’s partner so of course she has to show off now. Enchantress Xiao Yu is shameless. She’s really shameless.  (User banned for 24 hours for using uncivilized language. lol!)

On top of this, her Ex confronted her on behalf of his wife. His wife’s friends demanded him to rectify the situation as his bride was being called the “Other Woman” and a “homewrecker” online. (It’s ironic how they called Weiwei a homewrecker in Episode 23).

They said:

(Luweiwei) is been dumped yet still has the nerve to show up and cause trouble?
That’s right, Zhen Shui. How did you handle things?
(Luweiwei) must hate Enchantress Xiao Yu and deliberately came to cause trouble.
Enchantress Xiao Yu is being bullied.
You better give us an explanation.
XiaoYu: Don’t blame Zhen Shui. He doens’ twnat this either. I trust him.
ZhenSui: Enchantress Xiao Yu, I’ll clear this up.

Her Ex texted Weiwei, “What’s going on? Weren’t you cool with it yesterday? I tried to compensate you. You didn’t want it.” And she replied, “Dude, I just came to join in the festivities.”

She realized that she was stuck on the bridge. She couldn’t leave because people would think she was hurt, and she couldn’t stay either because she was ruining her Ex’s wedding day. Quick on her feet, she fabricated herbal medicine to sell at a discount. The gamers flocked to her to buy her goods.

She didn’t know it then but she managed to kill two birds with one stone. She successfully saved face while diverting attention from the wedding parade (I’m sure the bride wasn’t happy).

After she sold out all her goods and began to walk away, Xiao Naihe called her.

Naihe: What do you think of the wedding?
Weiwei: (Did he come here to gossip, too?) It’s grand.
Naihe: Would you like an even grander wedding? (she didn’t answer right away) Marry me online.

Having a better grasp of Nai’s character and his propensity to rescue her from attacks, without her knowledge, I’m 99.5% sure that he planned to squash the rumors that she was there to “abduct” the groom. He was defending her honor and reputation by demonstrating to others that she didn’t need to abduct that Ex of hers when he was there and he was a much better proposition that her Ex.

His friends were the first ones that he corrected. They realized who Luwei Weiwei was — the recently divorced ex of ZhenShui. If you remember, Weiwei was prepared to disclose that their marriage was only an alliance of convenience for the upcoming Couple PK Tournament. But he stepped in, saying, “She put her trust in the wrong guy. Don’t give her a hard time.”

He was defended her by painting the other guy, her Ex, as a bad guy and a loser for divorcing her and not recognizing her value. Even Weiwei was embarrassed to hear his comment.

See? From the beginning she doesn’t understand his sense of humor. She thinks he has a lame sense of humor and says corny jokes like, “Weiwei, you need photosynthesis for a seedling to sprout. A seedling kept in the dark will just become a bean sprout.” But each time, he has another meaning in mind.

But I digress, as usual.

The extravagant wedding was his way of showing to everybody that Weiwei was too good for somebody like ZhenShui. When somebody in the crowd texted that Weiwei was “used good” (or “harlot”), he abducted that guy for Weiwei to punish.

Thus, Episode 1 was the first time abduction was mentioned in their relationship. Nai showed up to offer her marriage after she was taunted and accused of abducting the groom online.

The second time abduction came up was in Episode 5. This time, Weiwei abducted Nai, or rather Bandit Girl abducted the Gushen Player. Now, again Nai ended up “rescuing” her story. He retooled the tragic tale of a loving and suffering Bandit Girl, and transformed it into a love story about two star-crossed lovers.

Nai didn’t want Guigui unhappy with the unrequited love angle, so the Gushen Player was made to pine for her Bandit Girl for the rest of his life in his version of the story.

My explanation here: Love O2O: Eps 5 and 6, The Bandit Story Explanation

The third time this abduction cropped up was when he was in the hospital and Weiwei watched the video multiple times. (Episode 8) Nai knew she was unhappy because she thought he “ghosted” her and she’d been abandoned.

But he was waiting for her to go online while tracking her online login. She pretended that she’d been busy studying for the exams and she didn’t understand him when he said, “I know.” Then, like in previous times, he ended her unhappiness by revealing his true identity to her and declaring to the whole school that they were a couple. lol. No more abandonment issues for her.

And now, he’s creating this “New Chinese Ghost Story” with an abduction theme. To me, he’s taking an active role in preserving their memories of the game. In collaborating with FengTeng to make the new version, he can guarantee that the old game will be preserved, perhaps not for a lifetime, but at least until he can share it with their child(ren).

That was discussed in his conversation with Weiwei in Episode 29.

Nai: I can’t promise forever, but it should last until our kid is able to play the game.
Weiwei: A kid?
Nai: That’s right. I want to at least bring the kid to Red Sparrow Bridge, let the kid know the first things we said to each other there.
Weiwei: I suddenly feel like what was troubling me just now doesn’t matter anymore. Even if the game gets canceled, the scenery we enjoyed together and the things we did together won’t erase the memories even if the data is erased. I’ll always keep them in my heart. What about you?
Nai: My memory will be better than yours.

lol. Of course, his memory would be better than hers. AND he wasn’t bragging about his being IQ.

No.

To me, he simply meant that his memory was “better” because he had the fuller, more complete picture of how things actually happened.

Weiwei was only seeing her side of the story. Or the proverbial tip of the iceberg.

She didn’t know that all along, he’d been there with her, rescuing her at the bridge,

surprising her with the revised video,

tracking her and waiting for her to login, and

developing her a game for her.

Most importantly, I don’t think she understood that she HERSELF had been abducted by Nai. From the very first time he saw her, he planned to “steal” her.

And at the end, he wasn’t going to give her back. Remember? He said so in Episode 30.

“Weiwei, I’ve decided never to return you to your parents.”

pwahahaha. Did you get that?? He’s so sneaky.

lol. That’s why, to me, abduction is a very good theme of this story.

  1. I love it! 😄 👏 👏 👏 This is a great connection to the abduction.

She didn’t know that all along, he’d been there with her, rescuing her at the bridge, surprising her with the revised video, tracking her and waiting for her to login, and developing a game for her.

This is why no one can ever beat Nai as the best boyfriend ever! He truly is up there!

I love that – right from the start he wanted to steal her and never return her to her parents! Swoon!!! 😍 😍 😍

Meanwhile I’m like that tip of the iceberg. 😀
