  1. Kalimera!

Thank you @Packmule3! She is pretty cute, though! LMAO!

I am waiting for this! It makes me laugh a lot…!

  2. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Hi there Doensaengs, @pkml3 and @Cleo! I’m looking forward to tonight’s episode. Pity if she does not end up with this nerdy guy in shorts, LOL. But whatever. I hope he discovers more to like about her, besides her cuteness.

How’s your Friday weather? Mine was hot but now has become very dark and rainy although it’s not yet 6pm!!! Thunder is rolling across the sky. 🙂
    ฅ(⌯͒• ɪ •⌯͒)ฅ❣

  3. Kalispera @GB Unnie! I missed ya! :*

Let us have a Happy October! How are you!?

I am waiting for Yumi to see what will happen with Woong!
She gets to meet the devious lady Sae-Yi too tonight! 😛

Our weather describes Autumn pretty well. It is cloudy, dark and we are waiting to see if it is going to rain…

P.S. Are we going to start our Saturday Rewatch Parties? Is it time?

  4. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Kalispera (Good Afternoon) to you Doensaeng Cleo,
I hope your September has been good after you August vacation.

I too want to see what Yumi will do when she meets Sae Yi. I hope her cells will galvanise her to do something interesting LOL.

The weather cleared a bit but it’s started raining heavily again. I feel like I’m already in the dark like it’s 8 or 9pm.

I’d like to do our Re-watches again, but not this Saturday (tmr I’ve got a meeting). We’ve also not decided on a show, since we wanted to watch ‘W – Two Worlds’ only when @WEnchanteur is back. I just checked that at last count, there were 3 votes for Goblin, and 2 votes for Days of Being Wild. So I guess it will be Goblin for a re-watch if there are a few of us who are agreeable. It will be interesting to see Kim Go Eun in 2 shows concurrently and still not feel whiplash, because she’s a good actress and differentiates her characters/roles well.

Let’s see if anyone else is here who’s interested in a Goblin Re-watch Party.
    (◍•ᴗ•◍)❤

  5. @GB unnie – Great idea to see KGE in 2 dramas. Because she is great actress, we will not be confused. I am voting for Goblin to rewatch as well. I just saw Gong Yoo in a cameo in Squid Game and would like to see him again. Just let us know when we can start. BTW, any news on @WEnchanteut? I hope he is ok!

Excited to watch this Yumi ep also, @Cleo and @PM3. On a side note, we are not required to turn our videos on during meetings even when working remotely so I’ve been making faces when I hear BS or stuff like that. I’m afraid when it’s time to go back to in person office, I will not be able to control my facial expressions. LOL!!! I have to copy Yumi’s.

  6. Spoiler…

“Gifts that make you mad” had me laughing! It’s totally relatable.

But how about this, the WORST gift I had was a “Gift that made me feel guilty”?

I was going away, and I wanted to break up with my then boyfriend. I didn’t have time nor inclination for a long distance relationship.

Well, guess what? On the night I planned to break up, he gave me a night shirt with a sketch of our first date. (He was an artist.) He said it was for me to remember us by until my return.

    Ugh! 😣

I had to accept the shirt and pretend it was the best gift ever.

  7. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Hi Doensaeng Janey! How’s your schedule? Are you game to start waking up early for good old Gong Yoo and Kim Go Eun?

I was thinking, maybe next Saturday the 9th or the following Saturday the 16th.

@pkml3, please let us know if you can open a thread for our resumption of a Saturday re-watch party.

LOL Yumi’s cells and the gift that angers or makes one feel guilty. Still, the gift wouldn’t have delayed the inevitable break up.

I had more that I wrote but decided to leave that for another time. I’m thinking that I’m a different kettle of fish from women who date. I need to remember if I ever was quite like those cells of Yumi!!

  8. @GB unnie, I am ok on Oct 9 but I can’t make it on the 16th. Other than that, I think I can make the rest of the Saturdays. Should we limit the number of episodes as well like in healer? Thanks for coordinating!

  9. Have you decided on Goblin, then?

  10. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Hi my Doensaengs @pkml3, @Janey, @Cleo and anyone else who’d care to join us, all are welcome!!!

Yes, we’ve decided on Goblin for our re-watch party. We have not decided if we’d like to watch just some episodes or, as with the case of Startup, to re-watch everything.

I personally do not mind re-watching all the episodes, mostly because I never made notes on which episodes were ‘epic’ and deserved more attention or which were good for a group watch. There’s no hurry to start right next week, so maybe we get a feel of how many or rather which episodes other BoDers want to watch and start it only on 23 October 2021?

    Please add your opinions!!

  11. Dear agapimenes, I’m game to start on Oct 23 and I’m ok to do all episodes. no homework Required, Just show up for the rewatch and shoot (aka comment) from the hip. How does that sound? 😉

  12. Back to Yumi’s Cells…

I’m really enjoying this mix of cells animation and live action reactions. I have not laughed so hard and punched the pillows for the sheer lunacy of some the scenes.

So… cells have the full explanation but GW has an “editor” cell (not really sure who was doing the edits) that parses his long explainer thoughts in key bullets to deliver. Hence women’s exasperation to men’s cryptic responses. Is that it? What a funny way to show that.

We got some toilet humor, literally! The poop cells were so, dare I say cute? In this episode, honestly is the best policy but I understand that they are still new In The relationship that they want to make good first impressions. But you cannot defy nature’s call.

Sokcho beach view from the hotel was beautiful. Yumi should just have been honest about the reservation and they would have avoided 2nd prince sullen cell coming out. And Yumi’s reason cell to lose his marbles. In the end, Naughty cell wins in this episode!

  13. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Yes agapimeni Janey, let’s go with all the episodes of Goblin without homework (unless we are so inclined and free to do any!) and start on Oct 23.

Agapimeni @Cleo, @pkml3 and anyone else interested… please note this!!!

  14. Kalimera @GB Unnie!

I am okay with what you have discussed with agapimene @Janey about Goblin!
Let’s start on Oct 23! It is okay for me too!

  15. I managed to watch the episodes and I couldn’t agree with you more @Janey. Honesty, honesty, honesty…Yumi wanted to tell him, but he then commented with that “pervert” word. Still, the naughty cells won this time. We need to see their lust cells how they reacted…LMAO!

As for Sae Yi, she is sly that one. She knew it was Yumi’s Birthday and didn’t care that she would upset her. For me this is a sign that marks her as a very dangerous type…
If Sae Yi was courageous enough, she would have confessed to Woong when he was single. What is the point to sabotage his relationship? The right time for them, has passed. I really liked that Woong came back and told her that beer is his favorite drink. Which means SY doesn’t really know him, after so many years.

  16. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Okie Dokie Doensaeng @Cleo! Let’s go for it!!! BTW is this a rewatch for you or a first watch?

@Janey, you asked about @WEnchanteur. I’ve tried to reach him through MyDramaList, but I believe he’s been off dramas entirely, and so may not have gone in to even read his messages. We all hope he’s doing OK and that he’ll come by here soon.

  17. @GB,

It is a rewatch for me as well. It was k-drama #4 that I watched – I just checked my notes. I have started it last year on Oct. 26! What a coincidence!

  18. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@Cleo, So it’s a one year anniversary rewatch for you, then! My goodness, you must be an organised person. You bothered to keep notes and you can find them after 1 year!!! I can’t say with any confidence that I’ll be able to do that! I don’t think I bothered with notes until only quite recently LOL.

  19. @GB Unnie,

Yep, I started writing down when I watched something, in order to keep track how many tv series I have watched.😊🤗

This July I forgot though, to update it and I had to track down my posts. 🙄😉

I am an organized person, that’s how I survived studying and working full time.🤨😁

There are times that I just forget to do so deliberately, because organizing isn’t everything, we have to experience the spontaneous as well…😁🥰😘

  20. When I saw the jars at the beginning of Episode 5/12, I knew right away what they were. My Korean neighbors across the street gifted me a store-bought jar of yujacheong when we got together for dinner on Chuseok. I like it the way GW fixed it for Yumi, in cold sparkling water. It’s also good as a hot tea. My favorite part is after drinking the liquid, spooning up and eating the sweet-bitter citron rinds.

I’m finding the casting in this Kdrama excellent. Kim Go Eun is doing well portraying smart but full of self doubts. I’m not pleased with the character’s tendency to sulk, but KGE leaves no question that she’s in a sulky mood. KGE is also cute, but not stunningly beautiful, which makes her insecurities easier for us to believe. I’ve seen the male lead before as a second lead in “Her Private Life” and as a supporting actor in “Descendants of the Sun,” but I didn’t remember him when I saw him in this. Ahn Bo Hyun is great playing a clueless but sexy nerd. I think this will be a memorable role for him. I haven’t yet watched Itaewon Class, which is reportedly his breakout role. The controlling and spiteful second female lead, Seo Sae Yi, is perfectly played by Park Ji Hyun. She had a similar role in “Do You Like Brahms?” and knows how to ride the line between normal and wicked.

I wasn’t sure I’d be sold on this Kdrama since it lifted the concept from the 2015 Disney Pixar movie “Inside Out.” And at first I wanted to take issue with the word “cells” being used to describe impulses, personality traits, learned behaviors, etc., but I find I’m able to enjoy the story without insisting on accurate terminology. Watching the cells process Yumi’s and GW’s thoughts and reactions is both funny and relatable. The gift-giving scene, the silent battle between Yumi and SY, all these things become “real” to us because we see the process the characters are going through and can empathize.

I wish Viki wasn’t so prudish, refusing to translate some of Naughty Cell’s dialogue. Naughty Cell is hilarious!

  21. @Welmaris Speaking of yujacheong… In the scene where Sae Yi cuts the yuja, it’s not actually yuja (yuzu). It looks like Meyer lemon or dangyuja, which are far easier to prepare. I thought it would be more meaningful if it were actual yujacheong because to prepare the fruit you need to remove the peel, remove the pith from the peel, julienne the peel, remove the seeds and then finally you can start putting everything in a jar. It’s a lot of effort and I wouldn’t do it for anyone I didn’t love. Once I tried simply slicing the yuzu and I will never be doing that again 😅 (it’s so bitter).

I finally warmed up to the scenes of the cells in Episode 5. They felt a bit jarring before, but now it feels like a natural transition. My background is in Biology, so I actively need to remind myself that it’s okay to have all these random cell types.

This show elicits really visceral reactions from me – it feels that real. It reminds me of the HBO show Insecure, which portrays a young woman in her 30s navigating life and love in LA. It’s not the same stylistically, but it feels like I could know Yumi, and she could be one of my friends.

I’m having some trouble with a suspension of disbelief. I struggle to believe that Yumi (and likely Woong?) are in their early 30s. Their behaviour reminds me of people dating in their mid 20s. Not a big gap in years, but a significant gap in maturity. While I understand Yumi’s insecurities, I have trouble watching her stress over every little thing (making a mountain out of a molehill!).

Eg. I think her reaction to Sae Yi was not unbelievable, but she could’ve stood back for a moment to assess the situation (use that Reason cell!). After all, Woong is dating HER, not Sae Yi, even though Sae Yi has been by his side all those years. Yes, you can reason yourself out of that argument, but I’m talking about the reality Yumi can see. Like Yumi said (she didn’t mean it, but it’s true), it’s nice for other people to take care of your boyfriend. Sae Yi gave Woong the yujacheong before he even met Yumi, as Sae Yi had her old haircut. Also, if you’re dating someone who’s physically attractive and a nice person, then chances are that someone else will be interested in them. It happens and it’s best to consider that as a compliment to you.

Of course, Woong could also reconsider his communication skills and obstinacy. The lines that he rehearses in his head are much better than the ones he says out loud. I actually love those scenes with the cells editing Woong’s thoughts. Interpersonal communication often involves reading between then lines and it kind of helps to think about how people edit their words.

I look forward to Yumi’s growth over the seasons because I’ve heard that’s the whole premise.

  22. @hotatoes,

Agree. If we pick apart Ep 5, then yes Yumi’s reaction to SaeYi’s passive-aggressiveness is over the top. To be that insecure? Or to blow up in the cab? Even when I had PMS, I don’t recall being that emotional. 🙂

However, I think the story was originally a webtoon — and the writer was male. So we’re actually seeing a MALE perspective of how a female think in this kind of situation, and this male writer was exaggerating things for comedy.

Now, if I were writing this webtoon, I’d show Yumi with an algorithm too, and an if-then decision tree like Woong had, then Yumi would cross-examine Woong in the the witness stand.

But yes, at the end of the day, she’s the girlfriend, not Sae Yi. And possession is 9/10th of the law. I didn’t see why she had to be jealous but I just went along with it because I wanted to see how the writer would explain it with the animated cells.

  23. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@hotatoes, I felt the same way about Yumi’s over-reactions, over things that are so irrelevant to the relationship. So much wasted angst and worry over the past that didn’t matter to Woong. The immaturity level has to start pretty low I guess, in order for viewers to see the growth in our characters. We may give her a pass for her insecurities because of a bad breakup (or unknown past hurts), but not for too many episodes, and especially as she gets to know Woong as a good guy.

I like the Cell Bulletin Board too. Those who tend to edit themselves a bit too much, should take a leaf from this show, and discover if they are not being too cryptic or leaving too much room for misunderstanding, by saying too little!

We await with anticipation, the time when the main characters develop sufficient trust in each other (and confidence in their relationship), that they can express themselves more freely, without so much fear/worry about what the other will think.

It will be interesting to see how Show manages it if Yumi really has to move on from one love to another.

  24. To be honest, Yumi is not a FL I can get behind. She’s too insecure and too focused on love/having a relationship that she loses her authenticity and self a lot of times in the name of love. I’m sad her writer cell is already deceased and also travel cell. Can’t they be resurrected? I hope so. If there are no behind the scenes cells (great comedy!) and no KGE, I probably will not be watching this kdrama. I don’t know much about the webtoon storyline but I hope we get to see her character development and growth as the episodes go. In the meantime, I’m just enjoying it as it is.

  29. Reply to spoilers…

Ahh… WG is not the end game. So that’s why I’ve seen some fans wishing for LMH to be the final bf of Yumi in the upcoming season(s). Hmmm.

  30. Kalimera!

@Janey, Do you want to know why? I came across the following:
LMH hasn’t denied any dating rumours about KGE and the fans want…to say something about it. So if they are together in Yumi’s Cells, more material will be out with them. blah blah blah…

Just let them be people…whoever they are dating or not, it is not our job.
Our job is to enjoy their work as actor / actress.

  31. @GrowingBeautifully You’re right that the creators of the drama have to start at a lower level in order to show Yumi’s growth over the episodes. I think it’s great that Woong is slightly more giving than Yumi is in tense situations. Otherwise, I don’t know if their relationship would’ve survived the hotel situation.

I’m excited to watch a show with this kind of premise because most dramas have a pretty clear romantic pathway with no shifts. Personally, I adore Woong, but both Woong and Yumi seem like they need more experience with navigating relationships.

  32. I have a slightly different take on Yumi’s encounter with Sae Yi (and her ensuing anger). I’m not sure it’s entirely from inexperience/immaturity on her part. SY is toxic and did a few power moves on Yumi during their first encounter–informing her that she had helped pick out her birthday present (to show how much Woong values her opinion), picking lint off Woong’s shirt while leaning over him, etc. Yumi’s cells told her to get away from this toxic woman. I think her blow-up with Woong in the taxi was more of a reaction to SY’s manipulations than any anger at Woong for holding back info, and from her frustration at how the perfect birthday she had imagined had been wrecked.

Perhaps her reaction to that scene was partly from insecurity but her hunch that SY wants Woong for herself is correct. Even though he’s in a relationship with Yumi, the pull of a force like that is sometimes hard for men to resist, especially given their longer history together. If SY admitted she wanted Woong and managed to feed his ego while he and Yumi were going through a rough patch, well it’s not too hard to imagine him giving into her.

Speaking of rough patches…I don’t see this as a OTP–they are fighting too much at the beginning of the relationship. This is part of the experience of learning to get along with one other human being in close/intimate proximity. So this may be a training-wheels relationship vs. a long-term one. (Although I have known a few long-term relationships that have started out with a lot of bickering, often from leftover issues from earlier relationships, which have resolved into a more peaceful partnership).

Meanwhile… I’m finding this show surprisingly delightful and often laugh-out-loud funny (hello poop cell!).

  33. Annyeong, i really enjoyed these episodes. i was watching late on saturday and i felt so bad for the hubby, coz i was giggling and guffawing a lot. i loved all the new cells that were revealed. even the Salty King. omg. wouldn’t it be cool to catalog all the CELLS that have been introduced?? that can be edited as the show progresses? haha

i love how the birthday gift came in a fake charger box. hahahah. so surprising… even tho SaeYi had a hand in picking it. oh well.

i liked how ep 5 ended with Yumi comforting GW’s tummy and they ended up sleeping together. cute. that toilet scene was no fun. gross. why???

omg @janey, naughty cell definitely wins episode 6. hahahah. STEAMY hot… ohhh lala… with the focus on the all-glass bathroom LOL poor etiquette cell got booted out wahaha. she tried!

#pervert how can WG say that? i think his comment made this episode more complicated… wow. i think that recorded call should have been noted when yumi called for reservations though. i was stressing out when she was in this process. she even missed lunch just to do this. i was thinking, shouldn’t it be better to do this outside of her desk?? ay yay. what a mess! but enjoyed that ending for sure. ooh lala.

right, they don’t really show the “editor” cell. it would be a smarty looking cell with glasses perhaps 🙂

**spoiler** i, too, would like the writer cell and travel cell to be resurrected please.

poor reason cell losing his marbles in this episode. ay yay

@cleo, Sae yi is a sly one indeed. shame on her. although i do feel bad for her, too, coz she really tried… i think even in college, when she already liked GW but GW deflected it meaning he never liked her. he probably did not want to outright turn her down all these time. so sad. and even though they knew each other that long, she doesn’t really know GW. and i feel GW always has his BEAR defense with Sae Yi hmmmm. Poro Sae Yi. she probably chose to part of his team just to be close to him. but her charms are not working on BEAR defended GW.

i like that you track when you watch your shows. i only keep a Review book on all the drama shows i’ve seen and when they came out, not the dates i saw them.

@PM3, interesting *spoiler** info that yumi ends up as a writer and she actually has BF #3 (per webtoon). this part is a heartbreaker coz i really like GW. 😢 do you think there will be 3 seasons of this show? daebak!

@hotatoes – even though GW and Yumi are needing more relationship experience… it’s interesting that GW is showing more maturity in handling their relationship being as he does not date. in a way, GW and yumi are in the same boat – not experienced boat. guess it’s understandable as Yumi has been traumatized from her previous break up. poor Yumi. it really has damaged her self esteem making her vulnerable to SaeYi’s mind games. i’m so glad she left that place. i know she wanted to check out SaeYi and make sure she’s not a threat. but she was the one affected. even though she’s is the GF – i don’t think she can help it given that this is her first come back relationship. awww. her birthday almost ended in disaster. i’m glad she came out and that GW was outside on his way to her. soooo sweet. except his edited explanation haha. men!

even though she has a meltdown at the taxi ride home, at least GW realized that there was a problem and that SaeYi probably had something to do with it. hmmm. i kind’a feel that SaeYi can’t be trusted now. shame. i’m hoping she will find someone soon and for her to stop sabotaging their burgeoning relationship.

enjoying this show very much and loving the CELLS 💙

  34. Although Yumi’s cells is based on a webtoon, it doesn’t have to exactly follow the plot of the webtoon, I’d think. Three seasons is two seasons too long, in my opinion. But I’ve noticed that each episode released is subdivided into episodes, each with its own number and title. Maybe that’s how three seasons will be crammed into 14 episodes.

@HK_Lady, one of the notes we saw on Sae Yi’s internal bulletin board noted that she didn’t want to get married, but would rather focus on becoming the best art director in the field of gaming…but if she ever did get married, she’d want to marry GW. GW & Yumi’s mutual friend (the one who set up their blind date) was right when he told GW that SY doesn’t want to date him, but wants to keep him from dating others so he’ll always be in reserve for her. SY’s behavior confused GW in the past: she’d initiate a mild level of skinship, then rebuff him. Mixed signals. I don’t think GW has always been uninterested in SY, but had her spurn him often enough that he gave up. Remember, GW’s perception of the interpersonal dynamics in their office is that they always fight like cats and dogs. For someone like him who has difficulty reading social cues, it’s not likely he’d read “I like you” in SY’s confrontational manner.

I do find it hopeful that once GW learned Yumi was upset after visiting his office, he realized SY had been subjecting Yumi to mind games. He should now know better than to trust SY in the future.

  35. @BethB

It’s always nice to read a fresh perspective and I get where you’re coming from. I wouldn’t go so far as to say that Sae Yi is toxic, but I will say she’s a snake.

I think that Yumi’s outburst was due to a cocktail of reasons: spending ages overthinking why Woong didn’t tell her, Sae Yi’s power moves, having her birthday ‘ruined’ and her own insecurities.

We know that Yumi’s hunch was right because we can see from multiple characters’ perspectives, but Yumi herself doesn’t have that knowledge. I think if Yumi was more confident, then the hunch probably wouldn’t affect her as much. She also might not have interpreted Sae Yi’s behaviour as being so underhanded. Don’t get me wrong – it was underhanded, but how it affects Yumi depends on how she interprets it.

But like you said, it’s a probably a training wheels relationship, so I understand why Yumi is vulnerable to Sae Yi’s power moves and why Woong has -1 communication skills.

    @HK_Lady

I guess Woong’s flowcharts must be pretty great because he makes a lot of redeeming last-minute decisions 😅

Sae Yi probably can’t be trusted, based on what she’s shown us so far. It really shows how selfish Sae Yi’s affection is – that she’d hold back Woong from happiness just so she can have a back-up.

  36. @BethB, @HKlady, @Welmaris, @hotatoes – thanks for the insights on Sae Yi. She is the type of person who enjoys mind games, she was doing hot/cold with GW that he probably developed his bear persona just for her as coping mechanism. And her passive aggressive behavior with Yumi is sneaky. I don’t like her character for sure. I’m glad Yumi tried not to listen to her (the hand dryer was a good prior for that restroom scene) and in The office, she was right to just get away from the toxicity she was seeing and feeling. It was inappropriate for SY to act like she was marking GW as her territory.

I do hope Yumi’s self confidence will improve in the next episodes. Or at least be able to ignore and tune out SY (or A Ruby) in the future. GW should teach her how to do a bear mode! LOL!

  37. I started it a few weeks ago but my morale was so low that I couldn’t enjoy the drama.

For episodes 5 and 6, they are just perfect. It’s really high art as far as the script is concerned. Every situation is pushed to its limit, one of the screenwriter’s specialties. The situations also have an internal structure and reuse of previous elements, interwined ideas. Great overall cohesion of a situation.

I take for example the scene of the hotel reservation, when Yu-mi panics because there is no room, and insists on having the one with the transparent bathroom. And this portion of the dialogue is used as a final gag. In the meantime, a lot of scenes make the situation spicy, including the famous dialogue in the car “only a pervert can book this”. We can call this “falling from charybdis into scylla”, and also twist the situation to its full potential.

Remember the incredible passage in Memories of the Alhambra, when the hero is in the hospital and events get worse and worse, until the famous multi-contextual scene in the parking lot?

In Yumi Cells, SJJ does that too! But applied to a lighter register. I quickly assume that such complex, structured, prepared, accomplished situations do not come from the manhwa but from the script. For safety I check. Yumi makes the reservation for the hotel in chapter 132. There is indeed a room with a transparent window but then, the manhwa does nothing about this situation. Until chapter 167, nothing. I guess nothing is done with it after that. I don’t have time to read the whole manhwa (I read the beginning). I see for now that SJJ just uses the High-Concept in her own way and some disparate ideas, maybe an outline of the main plot. In other words: she just writes the drama in her own way, with her ideas, much more powerful and structured. The manhwa is probably written on the fly, with possibly a main outline, but no real drama script-like structure.

  38. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE, I’m glad to see you’re back in your element, noticing the plan and structure of the script. It is true that SJJ milks the situation to it’s furthest limits, and we have just 2 possibilities, either the situation goes down the drain or something unexpected intervenes to change the direction.

I trust that you enjoy the end in better state of mind!
